- わが国の成人保健は、かつて結核などの感染症に関する保健事業が中心であったが、現在ではその対象が主に生活習慣病に関する保健事業となっている。 ここでは、現在、日本人の死因の過半数を占める生活習慣病の現状および対策について述べていく。 以前、生活習慣病の多くは「成人病」と呼ばれていたものである。「成人病」とは、昭和30年代初頭に成人病予防対策協議連絡会の議事録で「40歳～60歳位の働き盛りに多く、しかも全死因の中でも高位を占めている疾患」として記述されている。しかし、最近では、喫煙と肺がんや心臓病、動物性脂肪の過剰摂取と大腸がん、肥満と糖尿病など、食生活や運動などの生活習慣とこれらの疾患の発症とに高い相関性があることが明らかになっている。

- 認知症とは、脳の病気によって起こる症状であり「脳の後天的な障害によって、知能が持続的かつ比較的短時間のうちに低下し、日常生活に支障をきたすようになること」をいうが、認知症かどうかのポイントは、①記憶の低下、②認知の障害、③生活の支障の３つがあるかどうかという事である。この事を踏まえ、年相応の物忘れとの違いについて詳しく述べていく。 認知症と年相応の物忘れの鑑別は難しく困難である。認知症の初期症状に物忘れがあるが、物忘れのある人がすべての認知症というわけではなく、老化現象としての物忘れ(最近では、これを軽度認知障害と呼び、認知症の前段階と考えて、予防の試みが行われている)もあり、見分けが難しい。ただ、認知症と年相応の物忘れを比較すると、認知症は、特徴として体験した全体を忘れてしまう・進行する、見当識障害がある・自覚しない・生活機能に障害がでる・問題行動がある。
