英文法＜第１設題＞
- 主語を先行詞にした非限定の関係詞文句と分詞構文とを比較考察しなさい。 まず始めに非限定の関係詞文句について述べ、次に分詞構文について述べる。その上で主語を先行詞とした日限定の関係詞文句と分詞構文の比較考察を述べる。 【非限定関係詞文句】 非限定用法の関係詞文句は、すでに何らかの限定を受けている名詞に続けて使われる。したがって、名詞を限定するのではなくて、その名詞について説明を付け加えるだけの役目をするに過ぎない。また、非限定関係詞文句（Non-Defining Relative Clause）は、一様であるとも捉えられがちであるが、少なくとも３種類に分けて考えるべきであり、必ずしも「関係詞の前にはコンマがくる」とは限らない。 （１）Parenthetical Non-Defining Relative Clause（挿 入句的非限定関係詞文句） 先行詞（Antecedent）の後に挿入され、その内容を描写する非限定関係詞文句。特に、文の主語を先行詞とした「挿入句的非限定関係詞文句」では、次の例のように、「譲歩」や「理由」等の「含意[言外の意味]（Connotation）」が出て、意

- Thomas A. Edison is supposed to have parried the question of a skeptic who wanted to know what one of his fledgling inventions was good for by asking “What good is a baby?” ＊＊ is supposed to 〜 でshouldと同様の「～した方が良い、～すべき」というmodalityの意味となる。have parried のparriedは過去分詞系で、haveに続くことによって述語動詞の役割で後に続くthe questionを目的語とした、過去完了の「受け流した」の意味を表す。また、of a skepticで同目的語をthe question を修飾限定し、Who～（主格の関係代名詞）以降でa skeptic を連体修飾している。what 〜（名詞節を作る関係代名詞） は前置詞 for の目的格となる。"What good is a baby?"部分は、疑問文の直接引用でasking の目的語に値する。ちなみに、このgoodは形容詞ではなく、名詞のgoodであり、isはその補語である。
