As the number of large companies trading internationally increases, people are exposed to and adopt many aspects of cultures from other countries. Many people believe this is threatening the cultural diversity of the world.
Is it important to preserve the cultural diversity of the world?

Imagine, if you lived in a world with no cultural diversity. People would wear similar clothes, would speak the same language, would believe one religion and would eat something with little diversity. Although it would be convenient for people to cope with other people, it would be dull a world.

There is some merit to adopt other countries’ culture. I think the biggest change for Japanese was fashion. A long time ago, we wore very traditional dresses. Men wore long skirts and women wore many layers of clothes-sometimes twelve clothes! These were inconvenient, especially going to bathroom. After the end of Edo era (the Samurai era), Western style came into Japan. People noticed the merit of western style clothes so fashion in Japan changed rapidly. Nowadays, businesspeople wear business suits. Young men prefer to wear jeans that can show both casual and formal style. Going to cold places are easier than old times because of the special fiber clothes. These are more practical.

However, keeping tradition is important to preserve cultural identity. Language is the most obvious. When we lose our language, we will lose our identity. For example, when the Maori language was dying, it meant the Maori culture was dying because if Maori people do not use their own language they will lose Maori songs, Maori stories and many other aspects of their cultures.
