The poem “Theme for English B,” written by Langston Hughes, expresses the speaker’s feeling of separation from others just because he was an African American. The speaker is considered to be the author himself. He attends college, and he is the only African-American student in his English class. The instructor gives a writing assignment and tells students to “let that page come out of you-- /Then, it will be true.” (5-6) Since the speaker has many struggles in his mind, he thinks it is not that simple. This poem does not contain many poetical techniques; however, it contains a combination of images that suggests both distance and connection which makes the poem meaningful.
