Corpus is the accumulation of the spoken language and written language which can be used for the language analysis. The accumulation of the linguistic material which isn't electrolyzed, too, can be called corpus from the point of the preservation way, but nowadays, we think that corpus is the corpus which is electrolyzed.
In recent years, we come to feel familiar to the corpus. There are some reasons.
First, the English dictionary creating which used corpus inspired by the COBUILD English Dictionary became very popular mainly in Europe. Four popular learning English-English dictionaries (Collins COBUILD English Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, and Cambridge International Dictionary of English) are all made by using corpus as the basic data.
Second, to use corpus generally became very easy for us compared with about 10 years ago. Computer became more popular. The large-volume text data and corpus itself became available comparatively cheaply.
And last, thanks to the corpus linguistics, the meaning to analyze the data of the language use in detail became re-recognized by a lot of people. From the 60s to the 80s, with the influence of the generative linguistics by Noam Chomsky, the interest in our language analysis faded away.
