Alcohol gives pleasure to both individuals and society, but drinking alcohol and the risk of alcohol are opposite sides of the same coin. The problems of alcohol include Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (F.A.S), driving under the influence of alcohol and dependence. However, these problems can be solved as long as the individuals and society help each other.
The increasing number of F.A.S.-afflicted babies in many countries is one of the big problems of drinking alcohol. Young women take to drink just for fun and become addicted. This can cause an unhealthy child who more likely to drink and become just like his or her mother. Alcohol education can stop this vicious cycle. Governments should provide alcohol education programs while children are in adolescence. Showing a picture of FAS-afflicted babies and appropriate education will surely have an impression on the children and encourage them to think about keeping away from alcohol.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is another serious problem for the society. Every year, many people are killed by drunken driving, and some of the drivers might try to say; “I thought I was sober.” According to Newhouse, E (1999 July25) Great Falls Tribune, (referent on 2004 Sep14), http://www.gannett.com/go/difference/greatfalls/pages/part7/sorrow.html
there were 16,189 people killed in alcohol-related crashes in 1997. Alcohol sales regulation and stricter punishment for drunken driving will reduce the rate of the tragedies.
