Some people insist that it is important that governments provide unemployment and welfare benefits to citizens. However, others do not agree with this stance. I will discuss the advantages and move on to the disadvantages, then decide whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or not.
We cannot deny the fact many people benefit from the governments’ welfare policy. If the government does not provide unemployment benefits, many jobless people will not be able to make ends meet. They would struggle to buy food, pay bills and pay for rent. If the government provides welfare benefit for the citizens, people are will be able to live without difficulty, especially the unfortunate, such as single mothers, sick people, the old and the disabled. Single mothers, for instance, can stay home to look after their children. For elderly people, they might get a caregiver who can help them cook meals or take a bath. Sick people can see a doctor without a huge cost as long as governments provide social insurance. Facilities for the disabled such as ramp access to buildings, sound traffic light and the sign language surely help. Moreover, a social welfare scheme might help the unemployed to gain new skills.
However, there are also disadvantages in providing both unemployment and welfare benefits to citizens. By and large, people will tend to be complacent, once they can get money without working. They will become used to living without employment; they might pay the subsidies for their debt for drinking or gambling. In addition, providing unemployment and welfare benefits to citizens can be unfair to the majority of people who work hard and have to pay taxes.
