When I started researching about the U.S. military bases on Okinawa, I found lots of articles that are against them Many reasons were about the sexual violence from U.S. military personnel; environmental problems and the fear of military accidents. After I read these articles, my opinion leaned to remove the bases.
First, the rate of sexual crimes committed by the U.S. military personnel is incredibly high in Japan including Okinawa. Still there are many Okinawa women who live with the fear of sexual violence from U.S. military personnel.
Next, the environmental problem in Okinawa is also very serious. The area surrounding the bases is polluted by the waste oil and other harmful chemical substances that were used at the U.S. military bases. Many citizens who are living near bases are fear for about these pollution problems, because it may cause problems to the human body.
Third, many citizens are afraid of military accidents. The U.S. military often practices shooting. So many citizens are fear for about a stray shot. Not only a stray shot, there is a more dangerous accident and that is a plane crash. If a military plane crashes into a private house, someone might be killed. We can say that these accidents are inevitable. There are no ways to avoid these problems. Therefore, we must remove the bases from a populated area.
However, some people suggest that if the U.S. military disappears,
Save citizens rather than save Okinawa's Economy
