Love can make someone happy, sad, cry, scream, and can even make someone blind. The play “Othello” covers a great deal of love and its effect on people. It’s clear that Othello’s naivety is a weakness. However his misguidance and inexperience in this matter is also a weakness. The reason why he fell in Iago’s plan is because of his devotion for Desdemona.
Othello has never had the opportunity to fully understand this feeling As the play begins, we see him falling deeply in love with Desdemona. This is the first time he experiences something like this. He receives her affections even though he was thought of as a violent moor. Desdemona’s father disagrees with their marriage because of Othello’s appearance. However, Desdemona accepts Othello, for he exceeds the expectations and belief of Brabantio. They both live in two different worlds, but this could not stop their feelings towards each other. Othello says:
For since these arms of mine had seven years’ pith (1.3, 83-87)
Till now some nine moons wasted, they have used
Their dearest action in the rented field;
And little of this great world can I speak
More than pertains to feats of broils and battle;
This quote is telling Desdemona that Othello’ has spent so much of his life in the world of battle. Also, he reveals that he knows nothing of love and is not sure what it is. This is a main factor that causes Othello to fall into Iago’s plan. Even without the approval of her father, the two decide to marry, knowing that their love is true. It is because of this pure, strong affection that she was able to be with him until she died.
