Looking for Alibrandi is a story of a teenage Italian background girl called Josephine (Josie). She grows up mentally by experiencing many problems, discoveries and meeting new characters. Through out those experiences, her perspective on other characters changed a lot, but I think her perspective on herself changed the most.
Beginning of the story, Josie has no self-confidence on herself. She goes to private catholic school, but the only reason why she goes to St. Martha is because she got a scholarship. So many other students surrounding Josie are come from rich background. This situation is also making worsen the Josie’s inferiority complex. Moreover she is illegitimacy. She has no father but other girls have. Josie thinks that the whole circumstances are making her miserable and at same time, she doesn’t like herself.
She often envy other people and sometimes she daydreams herself to be in high society. For example, when she first met Ivy, she thought that it would be wonderful if she become her friend. Ivy is comes from really rich family and also she is like an idol in her school. I think Josie thought that if Ivy becomes her friend, her status would rise. And she thinks same thing with John. If John becomes her boyfriend, that can change her whole life. He is very bright, handsome and he is a son of politician. For Josephine, he is perfect boy. However, she knew things do not move that way. In the story, she told that rich people stick with rich people.
